2nd Grade

Second grade was one of my favorites to teach! My elementary placement was relatively short, so I only had 30 school days there. With classes that are once a week, that doesn't leave very much time, but we got a lot done. I got to do two projects with my second graders. We did a unit on shape and then moved on to color.

Geometric and Organic Shape

In this project, we explored the differences between geometric and organic shapes and used both to create a fall themed collage! We reviewed the basic geometric shapes and used all of them to create the cat. For organic shapes, we looked at examples that can be found in nature and then students created their own trees and cat tails.

Henri Mattise Inspired Painting

Following shape, we started our color unit! Color is my favorite element of art. We started the project by learning the relationship between primary and secondary colors and worked on the ability to identify them. Students were introduced to the characteristics of Fauvism and the work of Henri Matisse. We examined the use of color in Cat With Red Fish and students created their own version using primary and secondary colors in watercolor.
