Teaching Philosophy
Why Art?
The beauty in art as a subject is that there is no right or wrong when approaching a problem. There isn’t any one right way to do things, but infinite possibilities. It is also one of the few subjects where mistakes and experimentation can take place. Art offers students a creative outlet that is not offered in academic disciplines. Like all subjects, a teacher can make or break the entire discipline for the students. I have encountered far too many people who enjoy art, but no longer want to create because they have been made to feel like they are not good at it. As a teacher, I want to inspire students to create work that they are proud of and then continue long after the class is over.
The main reason I want to be a teacher is because it is more than just a job. I want to truly make a difference in students' lives. I hope to encourage my students to be artists, critical thinkers, and decision makers. The core foundations of art teach students many skills that will assist them as they grow into adults. No matter which career students end up in, they will use the skills they learned in the art classroom.
I believe that all students should be given the ability to succeed while also getting the chance to express themselves. I hope to create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable exploring their individual interests and taking creative risks. It is my goal to inspire and encourage my students to pursue what they are passionate about. Where other subjects discourage taking risks, art celebrates stepping outside the box. I believe that students should never be marked down for taking risks because art is a process of trial and error. An artist who does not take any creative risks also does not improve.
Art is a subject where all students can do well and gain confidence in themselves. I believe that students should always have a say in the projects they complete. When students have more control over their learning, they are more involved and excited to work. I also recognize that some students need more freedom while others need guidance and direction.
My goal as a teacher is to nurture student growth while also placing the foundation for an appreciation for art. I love seeing a difference in students' work from the beginning to end of the semester, whether that be through the execution of their ideas or better mastering the medium. I am very excited and motivated to begin my career in something that I am truly passionate about, and I hope I will be that one teacher who changes a students life for the better someday.
