This project focuses on texture and pattern. Students chose an animal to use as their subject and a pattern to decorate the background of their plate. We started with sketches, then moved to practice tiles so students could practice the sgraffito method. After completing the practice tiles, students moved on to their final plates!

In this unit, students used online resources to find inspiration from art history or contemporary artists and created their own landscape painting. We learned about copyright, public domain, and the guidelines for fair use laws and how to apply them in order to find reference images as artists. Based on their style selection, students were split into groups for more individualized instruction during the painting phase. Depending on their style choice, most students practiced completing an underpainting before moving on to color.
